This large and bright unit is located on the 1st floor of the Wychwood Barns Community Cultural Hub, a well-established community space with over 15 years of engagement. The space is home to 26 artist live/work studios, 32 artist work studios, 9 non-profit arts and environmental organizations and a 7,680 square-foot event venue in Barn 2. Wychwood Barns is a prime example of adaptive reuse and creative placemaking, renovated with collaboration, community, and environmental innovation and growth at the centre of its design.

Wychwood Barns is surrounded by a City of Toronto Public Park which contains several amenities, including a children’s playground, a large grass field which is home to a skating rink in the winter, a community garden, volleyball court and dog park. It is located in the colourful St. Clair West/Humewood neighborhood which features a wide variety of restaurants, coffee shops, transit routes, and is home to Salsa on St. Clair, a vibrant Latin dance festival that attracts hundreds of thousands of guests each July.

The Barns Art Market supports local talent within our diverse communities, in the art market-meets-gallery exhibition! If you're an artist, creator, or maker, we encourage you to come set up alongside other local exhibitors and take part in a retail style art showcase at Wychwood Barns. This is a fantastic opportunity to sell work, network, and grow your audience in the vibrant Greater Toronto community.

The Wychwood Barns Team will do their best to assign accepted applicants their top choice, however, due to limited spots this may not be guaranteed. At the acceptance phase you will be notified of your booth space if different than your top choice. BAM! is hosted in the Barn 2 event space, booths are open spaces with no walls, please use our 3D venue tour tool to view the space in advance of making your booth selection.

SELECTION PROCESS

Exhibitors are accepted based on the above requirements and assessed for professionalism and market readiness. Upon acceptance of the offer and confirmation of participation, you will be issued an invoice to pay your registration fee. Payment methods will be confirmed upon acceptance into the market.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must present original artwork, exhibiting a majority originals, paired with limited run print or other reproductions.
Artists must exhibit and vend their own work, resale of work made by others is prohibited.
Work must be complete, presented professionally and with a clear and feasible booth/gallery plan.
Artists should demonstrate a commitment to professionalism, and ability to exhibit work in a gallery context.

Artist Spotlight: Meer Mahmoud

The Community Cultural Hubs from an Artist's perspective

This winter, ArtHubs was awarded the opportunity to partner with ArtworksTO for their Newcomer program. ArtWorksTO is a workforce development initiative that provides participants with credentialed education, industry mentorship, and paid work opportunities to develop practical skills and build professional networks in the media arts industry.

We were lucky enough to be paired with the talented photographer and musician Meer Mahmoud . Meer worked with the ArtHubs team across Youngplace , Gibraltar Point , Daniels Spectrum and Wychwood Barns to capture the nature of the hubs, community programs and the everyday users of our spaces. His photographs highlighted the diverse and energized nature of what we do.

We asked Meer to share about himself and his experience working across the ArtHubs Community Cultural Hubs.

Can you tell us a bit about your background and how you first became interested in photography?

My background is in music; I studied guitar performance and music education. When COVID first hit, my music career was put on hold, so I picked up my camera just to fill the void. With each photo I captured, I saw my journey going in this direction, where I am now a photographer.

How would you describe your photographic style or approach?

My artistic work is deeply influenced by Minimalism. However, that does not always translate to my commercial work, where I try to focus on showing the true essence of my characters and their interaction with the space.

What do you think makes arts spaces like these important for artists and communities?

Beyond everything, we make art to connect and convey emotions and ideas. This complexity of our communication is what makes us human, and creating spaces for communities to gather and share art is essential.

Was there a particular moment or image from the project that felt especially meaningful to you?

My favourite part about this project was when a little girl was curious about the camera and I let her capture a photo, or when I was approached by a little boy asking me to take his picture, and then his mom telling me that he never let anyone take his picture. It felt special.

How has this project influenced your work moving forward?

This project has helped me build the connection, experience, and portfolio needed to expand my work within the arts and cultural sector.

What kinds of stories do you most enjoy capturing through your work?

I love telling the stories of individuals, focusing on a single musician in the orchestra, or a person experiencing the music from the audience and all the emotions in that moment. I love making a body of work that documents the build-up from the backstage leading up to that glamorous moment.

As a newcomer artist, what has this opportunity meant for your creative practice and professional development?

This opportunity has allowed me to test my creativity and fast reflexes, and to connect with people in the arts scene. It gave me the chance to learn and execute projects that I have not done before, expanding both my experience and understanding of the craft, and my professional portfolio.

Each hub has its own character. Did any spaces or moments stand out to you while shooting?

The space that I connected with the most was Wychwood Barns, I loved the very high ceiling and the distribution of natural light. It created a warm and alive atmosphere that made capturing photos more fluid and authentic.

The new studios are located on the second floor of the building, which overlook the vibrant Covered Street Barn and a lush courtyard garden. This open-concept creative space features 17 individual studios with partitioned walls, offering both privacy and flexibility to make the space truly your own.

Become a part of a dynamic community featuring theatre, music, visual arts, environmental initiatives, and urban agriculture while creating opportunities for collaboration, dialogue, and exchange. The growing community of artists in the Artist Studios (Unit 256) includes writers, painters, textile artists, and digital media artists. This dynamic group fosters a welcoming and collaborative space along side the wider arts and culture community of Wychwood Barns.

Wychwood Barns Community Activations Program

Wychwood Barns is introducing the Community Activations Program that invites artists, community, charity and non-profit groups to host free community-based events in our large Covered Street Barn space and Christie Courtyard – in the historic building now revitalized as a cultural hub.

Whether you are planning a creative workshop, film screening, spoken word performance, or a wellness program, our space welcomes you to bring the community together! Our intention is to bring lively energy into the space that fosters connection and community building.

What We Offer

A large open space in Toronto’s heritage building free of any venue rental cost
Flexible hours between 9AM – 9PM
Capacity to host up to 70 people
Social media promotion and monthly calendar feature for your event
Limited use of furniture; tables and chairs
Support Staff and Audio/Visual Technician at discounted rates ( Union-Compliant – please read “Things to Consider” for more details )

Eligibility Requirements

Must be a creative (artist or collective), non-profit organization or a charity group
Must be free or pay-what-you-can donation type events only
Event duration must fall within a 4 hour period on a Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday
Event must be appropriate in a communal setting. Suitability for the space will be assessed by the Wychwood Barns team

Please fill out the application form and provide as many details about your event to help us support you best. Wychwood Barns team will review the application and get in touch within the timeframe of 2 weeks. ArtHubs is now leasing a new artist studio opportunity at Wychwood Barns!

THE OPPORTUNITY  

Situated in the heart of St. Clair West, the new artist studios at Wychwood Barns offer a dedicated space for artists to create, experiment, and grow in a heritage site with deep cultural resonance.

Home to 26 live/work studios, 15 private work studios, 9 non-profit arts and environmental organizations, and a 7,680 sq. ft. event venue, Wychwood Barns has been a centre of cultural and communal activity for over 15 years.

Become a part of a dynamic community featuring theatre, music, visual arts, environmental initiatives, and urban agriculture while creating opportunities for collaboration, dialogue, and exchange.

STUDIO DETAILS:

Location: Wychwood Barns, 2nd Floor, 601 Christie Street

Area: 17 studios ranging approximately from 50 - 90 square feet in a shared space

Monthly Cost: $350 - $500 range varies by size

Immediate Occupancy Available

STUDIO RENTAL INCLUDES:

Dedicated workspace within a large open concept unit on the 2nd floor of the building
24/7 studio/building access
Utilities and Wi-fi
Access to slop sink and washing area
Power
Common Area maintenance
Access to the Hallway Galleries Program, ArtHubs Markets and Community

ELIGIBILITY & SELECTION PROCESS

Studios are available to practicing professional artists, with an up-to-date artist CV. Artistic practice with low or no ambient sound production and non-toxic or fume producing materials is preferred.

Artists will be selected on a first come first served basis once artist eligibility and studio fit has been confirmed. Please include an artist CV and description of your practice upon expressing interest in a studio space.

Join us for an exciting community art workshop being hosted in collaboration with Artheart Community Art Centre and Ontario Culture Days on September 27 from 10AM - 2PM! What better theme than the HARVEST season?

As we approach the end of summer, let's come together to express our gratitude to the lovely joys of nature during the harvest season in a creative way. This is a free mixed media workshop guided by facilitators and is open to all ages! No prior experience needed. All materials will be provided.

This immersive pop-up celebrates the launch of Endy Petit, their new kids’ collection of mattresses, bedding, and playful furniture.

What to expect:

Wander through a pillow fort maze built from duvets
Dive into a giant pink ball pit (10,000+ balls!)
Play life-size childhood games (Tic Tac Toe, hopscotch, ring toss)
Take home a custom doodle based on your dreams
Join children’s book author Monica Arnaldo for live readings throughout the day

Designed with both young families and “kids-at-heart” in mind, the experience highlights how restful sleep fuels curiosity, creativity, and wellbeing. Happening on October 4, we will be open all night long with incredible art, activations, and so much more, all centered around this year’s theme of “Translating the City”. Visit us from 7PM – 7AM!

ECHOES by Jackson and Dickson @jacksondicksonstudio “Echoes” is a sound and video installation that celebrates Hamilton’s industrial soundscape, channeling the enduring rhythms of a city shaped by steel. This immersive work invites audiences to reflect on the strength of labor, the richness of legacy, and the powerful sonic identity that continues to resonate through its industrial past.
Bee Mine by Calabra @garycapon13 Bee Mine, a striking light and sculptural installation in the Christie Courtyard. The distorted hexagons represent the impact technology has on humans, animals and the environment long after it has become obsolete and military conflicts have ended.

We invite you to explore our spaces as we foster connection and creativity through showcasing compelling narratives.
